Biology examines the physical characteristics of living organisms-structures, growth, evolution and function. The biology major provides an understanding of the unifying concepts, diversity and importance of organisms. Students develop competence in all major fields of biology and are prepare for entry into a diverse array of careers.

This major provides students with a general background in the supporting physical sciences. In order to tailor the program to specific career goals, students may add to courses in biology through concurrent enrollment at California State University, Fresno, in areas such as plant and animal science or through various summer field courses in environmental biology. Two emphases are offered, a general biology emphasis and a secondary teaching emphasis, for students interested in teaching:

• Biology Secondary Teaching Emphasis

The bachelor of arts in biology is appropriate for students interested in graduate school or in various professional fields, including health professions, environmental careers, veterinary medicine, and science teaching.
