#12 Sunbirds suffer set back; drop two against Lancers

Game 1 box score; Game 2 box score

Riverside- It was a tough day on the diamond for the #12 Sunbirds as they fell victim to a doubleheader sweep granted by the California Baptist Lancers. Game one saw extra innings and ended in a 2-1 loss. Game two was mainly controlled by the Lancers in route to a 9-5 loss.

Starting Pitcher Chris Schwinden pitched eight strong innings in game one. He scattered six hits while striking out eight and giving up one run.

The Sunbirds scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Leadoff man, Jared Coleman, started the inning with a single and later advanced to second when Thomas Raymundo laid down a sacrifice bunt. Josh Jackson's double to left center platted Coleman for the early lead.

Schwinden continued to dominate and didn't allow the Lancers to get on the scoreboard until the bottom of the ninth inning. A lead off double by the Lancers later came around to score and tie the game .

Neither team scored in the tenth inning, but the Lancer's platted the winning run in the home half of the eleventh.

Daniel Brodie was charged with the loss, which dropped his record to 1-2. Jacob Burns and Aaron Lynn each went 2 for 5 to lead the Sunbirds at the plate.

Game two started with a two run first inning for the Sunbirds, but the Lancers were able to answer back with five runs in the next three innings.

The Sunbirds managed to put up three more runs in the comeback effort, but the offense of the Lancers continued to produce in route to a 9-5 win for the home team.

Antone Ontiveros was charged with the loss, which dropped his record to 6-3. Justin Keeney went 2 for 3 and Case Rigby chipped in with a 2 for 4 night to lead the Sunbirds at the plate.

The two losses drop the Sunbirds to 20-9 overall and 12-7 in the GSAC. They will be back in action this coming Wednesday, April 2nd, when they host the Westmont Warriors. A previous game that was suspended earlier in the season will be finished first and then the original scheduled nine inning game will follow shortly after.
