Faculty in Philosophy

Full-time, continuing status track, 9-month appointment in the School of Humanities, Religion and Social Sciences.

Job Description:

The philosophy program provides students with a thorough understanding of philosophy grounded in the liberal arts tradition, emphasizing the articulation of a self-reflective and critical mode of thinking, and stimulates Christians to engage philosophical traditions for integration of faith and learning. The program is intrinsically interdisciplinary in nature and enables students to actively engage in study across the disciplines of the university from a variety of theological, cultural, and historical perspectives. The key role of teaching general education philosophy courses enables a broad range of students to engage in core questions of humanity whether or not majoring in the discipline.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct the undergraduate philosophy program including academic oversight, administration, assessment, recruitment of adjunct faculty in both the traditional and degree completion programs, and recruitment of students to the program;
  • Teach courses in philosophy, history and religious studies, consistent with areas of specialization and based on curricular needs in traditional undergraduate and degree completion programs;
  • Engage with the FPU community in a broad discussion, across disciplines, about the philosophical implications of Christian higher education, especially in the evangelical and anabaptist traditions;
  • Develop and expand curricular options based on a careful program review;
  • Mentor and advise philosophy majors (as well as general education students);
  • Participate in scholarly, departmental and university activities.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Doctorate (or nearly completed doctorate) in philosophy or closely related field;
  • Experience in, or aptitude for excellence in, college-level teaching;
  • Ability to work with students, staff and faculty in a theologically and ethnically diverse collegial environment;
  • Record or promise of scholarly achievement;
  • Commitment to the Christian faith and the university’s mission of Christ-centered teaching and learning, and involvement in a local church.

 Preferred:

  • Secondary degree in history, theology, biblical studies, religious studies, or related discipline.
