Head Women's Basketball Coach

Exempt; 40+ hours per week; 12 month contract

Job Description:

The head women’s basketball coach directs a women’s basketball program that seeks to be nationally competitive within the NCAA Division II. FPU was accepted into the NCAA Division II membership process in July of 2011 and began competing in the Pacific West Conference in 2012-13. The FPU women’s basketball program has a rich tradition of both academic and athletic success, with an all-time record of 512-392. As a former NAIA member, the program had seven conference titles, the second most in the history of the Golden State Athletic Conference. Primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to recruiting, directing effective practice, coordinating off-season conditioning, fundraising, and all aspects of program administration. Additional responsibilities may be considered based on university needs and candidate strengths/interests.

  • Developing and maintaining a women’s basketball program that is athletically competitive within the Pacific West Conference and NCAA Division II.
  • Working to maintain an atmosphere within the FPU athletics program that is consistent with the mission of FPU, including the active demonstration and modeling of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Operating the women’s basketball program within the mission, policies and regulations of FPU, the Pacific West Conference and NCAA Division II.
  • Maintaining and submitting all required NCAA compliance documentation.
  • Providing leadership in the academic, spiritual, personal and athletic development of student-athletes at FPU. 
  • Being responsible for all administrative aspects of the women’s basketball program including scheduling, off-season conditioning, program equipment, program budget, and the direction of FPU-identified women’s basketball camps.
  • Hiring, supervising and directing all full-time, part-time and volunteer assistant coaches in proper function and assignments.
  • Determining fiscal requirements and recommending budget to athletics administration. 
  • Monitoring, verifying and reconciling expenditures of budgeted funds.
  • Overseeing, organizing and conducting effective practice sessions including sessions involving individual work.
  • Overseeing, organizing and conducting an effective recruitment strategy.
  • Serving as preliminary contact for scheduling of all women’s basketball games. 
  • Coordinating schedule through proper channels in the Department of Athletics.
  • Purchasing and maintaining all team uniforms and equipment.
  • Actively supporting and engaging in FPU fundraising efforts for the women’s basketball program, the Sunbird Association, and other FPU fundraising efforts as appropriate or needed.
  • Working in support of FPU staff, faculty and administration in all areas including facilities, athletics administration, sports information, athletic training, student life, and academic efforts.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Commitment to the Christian mission of the university.
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Previous successful intercollegiate basketball coaching experience.

Preferred:

  • Previous successful NCAA Division II coaching experience.
  • Demonstrated success in recruiting at the collegiate level.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to following NCAA, conference and institution legislation and rules.
  • Proven commitment to athletic and academic success.
  • Previous fundraising experience.
  • Customer service orientation and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Fresno Pacific University is currently in candidacy year-two of the three year NCAA Division II membership process. FPU Sunbird athletics is a full, championship-eligible member of the NCAA Division II affiliated Pacific West Conference.
