Male Residence Director

40 hours per week, plus residing on-campus (11-month live-in commitment July 15th – May 31st and two weeks between June 1st and July 15th each calendar year)

Job Description:

The residence director works directly with freshman and sophomore male students and resident assistants to build living-learning environments that contribute to and enhance the academic, intellectual, interpersonal, physical and spiritual development of residential students. The residence director interprets, implements and promotes the values and policies of the institution.

Responsibilities:

Service:

  • Represent the university and manage a professional and active relationship with students, staff, faculty and others to understand the university’s unique needs. 
  • Supervise a staff of seven resident assistants and share in the development of the overall resident assistant team. 
  • Assist resident assistants with the formulation and articulation of a vision for their living area.
  • Administrate evaluations and provide feedback for resident assistants. 
  • Meet with resident assistants individually and as a group each week to disseminate information, provide training experiences, foster personal and professional growth, and develop a sense of team cohesiveness and vision. 
  • Assist with projects including recruitment, training, orientation, retreats, leadership/spiritual development, and interpersonal competencies. 
  • Create learning experiences for students in residence, ensuring that their experiences actively contribute to the educational philosophy of the university. 
  • Be aware of student issues, build relationships and be available to those who have concerns and problems by maintaining a visible presence in each living area through visiting, participation in residence functions and by periodically attending module meetings. 
  • Have a working knowledge of campus polices/resources and community agencies for referrals of emotional or health issues that may arise. 
  • Intervene and implement university policy and procedures in crisis situations and contact additional professional staff and campus safety as necessary.
  • Participate in the emergency on-call rotation with other residence directors. 
  • Affirm the mission and goals of the university through the development of community based on biblical principles and the Fresno Pacific Idea. 
  • Assist residents in the development of respect agreements for their living areas. 
  • Act as a liaison between staff and students. 
  • Demonstrate support for the Division of Student Life, residence life and the policies and procedures that direct community development, behavior and personal lifestyle at FPU.
  • Communicate institutional policies, procedures and regulations as outlined in the student handbook, and encourage students to share responsibility for upholding them.
  • Provide direction for resident assistants in confrontation, intervention, mediation and documentation.
  • Address students in living areas who have had a detrimental effect on the FPU community or who have violated university policy and procedures. 
  • Support Fresno Pacific’s restorative discipline process by submitting reports, investigating situations and providing information. 
  • Participate/lead mediations and follow up on mediation agreements. 
  • Attend Basic Institute-Mediation and Peacemaking training (August). 
  • Assist resident assistants in the planning, development and implementation of programs that will enhance community and personal growth. 
  • Promote awareness, attendance, interaction and enthusiasm for campus events and activities. 
  • Provide input for policy making and implementation. 
  • Attend residence life and student life staff meetings. 
  • Assist with housing related tasks such as room inventories, check-in/check-out and room change procedures. 
  • Contribute to the residence life team by supervising the residential programs coordinators or assisting in specialized areas such as web site development, media productions, event planning and advertising, etc. 
  • Contribute to the Division of Student Life by overseeing additional supervisory responsibilities for one of the following possible areas: men’s ministries, drug & alcohol awareness and prevention programs, first year experience, etc. 
  • Be available for all major campus events such as Thanksgiving banquet, MCC Sale, housing opening/closing, new student orientation, etc. 
  • Be available to students during evening hours. 
  • Provide supervision to student employees.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Commitment to the Christian mission of the university. 
  • Gender - male.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Excellent computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment. Must include Word and Excel. 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to interact with people in a warm, professional manner. 
  • Ability to respond to emotional student and employee situations in a calming and resilient manner.
  • Ability to interview, train and orient staff.
  • Demonstrated organizational capabilities, detail orientation and the ability to handle multiple proprieties simultaneously. 
  • Team player with ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to learn new technology. 
  • Supervisory experience. 
  • Valid California driver’s license and ability to drive to various appointments. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred:

  • Experience in the field of residence life.
  • Master’s degree in college student development, higher education, counseling or related field. 

Environmental Conditions:

  • Indoors in a college residence hall environment with exposure to excessive noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes at least fifty percent (50%) of the time. 
  • Frequently work at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions.

Physical Demands 

  • Attendance and punctuality. 
  • Mobility within the campus. Ability to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs. Ability to use hands and fingers to handle office equipment, records and files. Occasionally required to reach with arms and hands, and to stoop, kneel or crouch. Vision abilities required by this job include the ability to read and discern written errors on paper and electronic documents. Ability to talk and hear. Ability to lift up to 15 pounds. Ability to drive a vehicle.

Compensation:

Pay is based on upon a starting salary range of $26,000 in conjunction with qualifications and experience. In addition, on-campus two bedroom apartment, and partial meal plan during Fall/Spring semesters.
