"How do I start a communications project?"

All communication projects need to be opened through Communications Specialist Laura Brickey. These include print, Web and multimedia projects. Please contact her by phone at 559-453-5552 or at laurabrickey@fresno.edu to discuss the details of your project.

All new jobs also require a communications brief which can be downloaded at www2.fresno.edu/facultystaff/communications/. This document asks a series of questions about your particular project which helps our office to better understand your needs.

What is a realistic timeline for a project?

A brochure, flyer or postcard usually takes about a month from conception to holding the piece in hand. Time is needed to design, proof and print the piece. Some projects may take more or less time depending on how busy our department is. The most important thing to remember is to get your projects on our job list early. Even if you don't have all of the content ready, let us know your project is coming so we can plan it into the schedule. Laura can also work with you on a timeline for when she needs to receive content, etc.

Turnaround times for print, video, audio and web projects vary greatly depending on the size and magnitude of the project. Please contact Laura for estimates on these projects.

What if I have a last minute project that just came up?

Our main goals include helping you succeed in your job and maintaining a unified image for the university. We realize that sometimes things come up at the last minute. Please don't automatically assume we are too busy to help. No matter the size of your project, if we can adjust our schedules to make things work, we will.

What kind of information do I need to provide for a project?

We need you to provide the content for any given project. If, for example, you need a brochure, we need to know what you want it to communicate, the photos you want included, etc. If you would like help developing content, we are happy to offer assistance. For example, if you know you need to say something but aren't sure how to word it, our writers can offer suggestions.

How does the proofing process work?

Proofing is often the most time consuming phase of a project. We are careful to check for grammar and spelling mistakes as well as make sure the piece follows general branding guidelines. But the ultimate responsibility for proofing falls to the client. Please read everything carefully. We often don't know if content (such as dates, prices, phone numbers, etc.) is correct and depend on the client to check those things. We require that the client sign-off on a final, clean proof before a piece goes to print. (Proofing of print and web projects works a little differently because of the style of media.)
