Promotional Image/Words Policy

Fresno Pacific University uses the images and words of students, faculty and staff in a variety of promotional materials and media. Students, faculty and staff are what make FPU the place it is and their achievements are our best form of promotion. However, occasionally a student, faculty or staff member will engage in behavior that makes that person's image and/or words inappropriate for promotional materials.

This policy lays out guidelines to determine some kinds of behavior that would justify the removal of a student, faculty or staff from inclusion in promotional materials, how that determination is made and who takes action.

Valid reasons to stop using a certain model in promotional material:

  • Student or faculty/staff member who has been removed for improper conduct.
  • Student or faculty/staff member who has somehow disgraced the school publicly.
  • Student who has been academically disqualified and would not be readmitted.

Some invalid reasons to stop using a certain model in promotional material:

  • Former student or faculty/staff member who is no longer at FPU.
  • Student who has been academically disqualified but might be allowed readmission.
  • Student who attended but did not graduate from FPU.
  • Student who is getting a bad grade in a class.

Differences need to be noted in the case of group photographs, portraits of a single person and photographs of two or three people. Determinations will be based on how much the person/people in question are the focus of the photo(s) at issue.

  • Portraits of individuals may be removed for any valid reason noted above. The same is true of students quoted in any promotional material.
  • If one student or faculty/staff member in a photo of two or three people falls under the valid reasons above, the photo may be removed.
  • If one or two students or faculty/staff members in a large group shot fall under the valid reasons above, the photograph may remain in use.

The university communications staff will keep the names and releases of each model in photographs or quoted material for as long as that material is considered for use. The staff will work with relevant campus departments, such as retention and student life, to monitor whether a model's behavior falls into one of the valid categories above.

Any faculty/staff or student may suggest a photo or quote be removed. All decisions whether to remove a photo or quote will be made by university communications staff. This policy is by the authority of the Integrated Marketing Team.

Suggestions and questions should be directed to Diana Bates Mock, executive director of media and community relations and head of the University Communications Office.
