Admission Requirements Exceptions & Allowances

If you do not meet the following admission requirements, some exceptions and allowances may apply. Please check with your program director for details.

2.75 GPA

If your undergraduate GPA is less than the 2.75 requirement, you will be asked to submit a letter explaining the reason(s) for your lower GPA and why you should be considered for the teacher education program. Your program director will look at your more recent coursework, your test scores (CBEST and CSET), your letters of recommendation, and your own explanation letter.

You may be asked to spend one semester in non-field based coursework to demonstrate your ability to do graduate level work, or your director may decide that you are eligible to enroll in a full-time program including field based coursework.

90 hours working with children

If you are not able to document 90 hours working with children, your program director may decide that you are only allowed to enroll in non-field based coursework while you find opportunities to gain this valuable experience.

CBEST

Verification of a passing score on the CBEST is a requirement for the teacher education program. If you have not yet taken the CBEST, you will be eligible to enroll in non-field based coursework. You must have passed all parts of the CBEST to enroll in field based coursework.

CSET

The CSET for multiple subjects is now required for all candidates for the multiple subjects credential even if you have completed an approved liberal studies major. If you have not yet taken the CSET, you will be eligible to enroll in non-field based coursework. If you have strong scores on all sections of the CSET, you will be allowed to enroll in field based coursework (except for your final student teaching). You must pass all parts of the CSET for multiple subjects prior to enrolling in your final student teaching or internship.

Degree not yet posted

If your BA or BS degree has not yet posted, you can still begin coursework in the teacher education program. You will remain in unclassified standing until we receive verification that your degree has been posted. You will not receive any financial aid until your degree has posted and you have been moved to classified standing. You will be financially responsible for your tuition costs until your financial aid arrives. You may contact Student Financial Services to make payment arrangements.
