Program Pacing

The teacher education program recognizes some students wish to pursue their credential as a full-time students while others prefer a part-time schedule. We offer both options.

Full-Time Option

Full-time students take courses in the afternoon or evening and complete student teaching requirements during the day. The following is a typical program for non-working students: two full-time semesters and selected courses during the summer.

Summar - 7 units

  • Optional summer "Jumpstart"
  • Two evening classes

Fall - 13 units

  • Initial student teaching five mornings per week, two 50-minute periods for 12 weeks
  • Three afternoon or evening classes
  • One student teaching seminar

Spring - 13 units

  • Final student teaching all day, five days per week for 15 weeks
  • Two evening classes
  • One student teaching seminar

Total units = 33

Part-Time Option

Part-time students can take courses in the evening and also complete limited student teaching assignments accommodated to their working schedules. Part-time students must become full-time students during their last semester in order to complete their final, directed student teaching.

The following is a typical program for working students: three part-time semesters including limited field experience and courses in the evening. The fourth semester is full-time, directed student teaching.

Fall - 8 units

  • Initial student teaching one 50-minute period per day, five days per week for 12 weeks
  • Two evening classes
  • One student teaching seminar

Spring - 9 units

  • Initial student teaching one 50-minute period per day, five days per week for 12 weeks
  • Two evening classes
  • One student teaching seminar

Summer - 8 units

  • Two evening classes

Fall - 8 units

  • Final student teaching all day, five days per week for 15 weeks
  • One student teaching seminar

Total units = 33
