What programs do you teach in?

Technically I do not teach. Currently I mentor student teachers and new mentors for the School of Education. I also manage the Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA) that is required for all student teachers. This is managed through Task Stream.

Share why you teach at FPU

The mission statement for the School of Education is that "Teaching is a calling to redemptive service." I wanted to become a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in a young person's life. The classroom was the perfect place to teach my passion and daily connect with teenagers. Nine years ago I was asked by Linda Hoff to consider mentoring for Fresno Pacific. This position has allowed me to continue, in a different venue, to be there for students. I was asked by a little girl, who was interviewing me, what was the best part of my job. I told her it was the people I work with here at Fresno Pacific.

Scholarly Interests

My main interest is in how to maintain the technology savvy that my students must adhere to become teachers in the 21st century. As a digital immigrant there are many things that are not intuitive to me. I work to read and explore new means of connecting education to technology.

Professional and Service Experience

When I moved to Fresno in 1985, I was ware of the huge Southeast Asian refugee population. I worked as an ESL teacher for Fresno Adult School and on staff as the director of Southeast Asian Refugee Ministries at First Presbyterian Church to reach out to this population.

My husband and I moved into the downtown Lowell neighborhood in 1991. We have raised our children in this neighborhood and have committed to be an advocate to those who live in this poor area of Fresno by necessity, not by choice. Our home is used as a mission site by various agencies, is home to a neighborhood tutoring center and a safe place for children and families.

I have also been involved in various art projects as a muralist in Fresno schools and other venues.

Personal Experiences

One of my past roles in the School of Education was as a seminar teacher for student teachers. I think of one student in particular whom I taught and mentored. One class session I hosted my students in my downtown home and walked the alleys and streets of my community. We were discussing the idea of teaching children of poverty. The first summer after this student taught, he gave his entire break to teach the poor of Africa. I believe this desire was kindled by what he experienced as a student teacher here at Fresno Pacific University.
