Student loans are offered to students and parents of dependent students to assist with educational costs. Student loans usually have lower interest rates than other loans and are often issued or guaranteed by the government. Federal Stafford Loans can be need-based (Subsidized Stafford Loan) or non-need based (Unsubsidized Stafford Loan). The federal government will pay the interest on any subsidized loans while the borrower is in school or deferment. The borrower will accumulate interest on an unsubsidized loan while he or she is in school.
The Federal Parent PLUS Loan for undergraduate students enables parents with a good credit history to assist with the education expenses of their child. Parents may borrow up to the cost of tuition, books and fees minus any other financial aid. These loans are also non-need based so anyone can apply.
