KEYNOTE SPEAKER
David V. Loertscher, Ph.D., is a professor at San Jose State University, where he educates teacher librarians in the reinvention of school libraries and computer labs into Learning Commons. Instead of storage spaces and isolated teaching areas for library lessons, Learning Commons are collaborative both in physical and virtual space. Here, the entire school community is building, constructing, testing, developing and creating as part of school initiatives.- Loertscher has guided schools and school districts across the U.S. and Canada in the building of Learning Commons through his books, workshops, boot camps, conference presentations and personal consulting.
- Much of the “construction” of a Learning Commons concentrates on Knowledge Building Centers, Book2Cloud interactive ebooks, the construction of Personal Learning Environments by students and the construction of a Virtual Learning Commons.
- The Learning Commons collaborative is built upon the principles and research of the Common Core Standards, critical thinking, collaboration, habits of mind, learning through technology, differentiation and school improvement. The idea pushes the library into the center of teaching and learning in the school and uses whatever professional resources and personnel already exist.
