Historical note

The Executive Council was created as part of the 1990 General Conference Restructuring Proposal. Its responsibility is to advise, coordinate and administer the work of the General Conference. More specifically, it coordinates the work of boards, long-range planning, creating conference vision, budget review, resolving tensions, custodianship of the constitution, inter-Mennonite and inter-denominational concerns, international Mennonite Brethren relations, and other such duties. The Executive Council is also responsible for planning the biennial General Conference conventions with the convention program committee.

The Council consists of the executive officers of the General Conference, the chairpersons of the boards of the General Conference, the moderators of the national conferences, and the executive secretary of the General Conference.

The Executive Council carried on the General Conference administrative tasks that were the responsibility of the Board of Reference and Counsel before 1990. The board ceased to exist with the divestiture of the General Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches in 2002.
