Woodwind ensemble adds new layer to instrumental music
A new music ensemble allows another section of the band or orchestra to shine.
Pacific Woodwinds features flutes, clarinets--including the largest member of the family, the E-flat contrabass--oboes and bassoons. There is also a related saxophone quartet.
Membership in both groups is open to students, faculty, staff and the Fresno-area community.
A woodwind choir adds a whole new layer to the university's instrumental range, according to Patricia DeBenedetto, ensemble director.
"The sonority is so different, it sounds like a huge pipe organ," she said. DeBenedetto also leads the Community Wind Ensemble and teaches at FPU.
A class is available for musicians who want credit, and all participants will learn self-confidence, listening and soloing skills. Pacific Woodwinds is a natural extension of FPU's instrumental line-up, which consists of brass, hand bell and jazz ensembles and a baroque orchestra as well as Community Wind Ensemble and Crosswind, a vocal/instrumental group.
"There are a lot of options," DeBenedetto said.
