Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching Program and Lead Instructor in Foundations of Education

Full-time, with faculty rank; continuing status track; 11 month faculty appointment in the School of Education.

Job Description:

For more than 30 years, FPU has offered the single and multiple subjects California credential programs as non-degree (credential-only) programs. Starting fall 2012, the Division of Teacher Education offers a master of arts in teaching (MAT) program.  The MAT coursework will enable FPU new teachers to extend and deepen their understanding of effective teaching strategies and curriculum analysis. Students will be challenged to reflect on their roles as teachers and their commitment to teaching as their vocation.

Students will develop an understanding of qualitative research methodology and skills which they will apply by completing an action research project. The program will utilize features such as the cohort model, blended or face-to-face course delivery systems, and summer teacher institutes to foster a robust, supportive, professional community of new teachers. 

Responsibilities:

The director of the MAT program will provide overall leadership and management of all aspects of the program and coursework. In addition, this faculty member will serve as lead instructor in Educational Foundations, the credential course in which students study the social and psychological foundations of education. Specifically, the director will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Work collaboratively with the chair of the Division of Teacher Education and other program directors within the division to develop a dynamic, excellent MAT program;
  • Collaborate with faculty who teach in the Division of Teacher Education; 
  • Recruit, support and train adjunct faculty to teach in the MAT program as needed;
  • Advise MAT students;
  • Mentor MAT students throughout their culminating action research projects; 
  • Teach in the MAT program. Teaching assignment is dependent on candidate’s experience, research interests and program needs. 
  • Teach Foundations of Education in the credential program. As lead instructor for the course, provide leadership for adjunct faculty who teach this course in regional centers. 

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Earned terminal degree in education or related field;
  • Evidence of successful experience teaching college or post-BA students;
  • Record or promise of scholarly achievement;
  • Familiarity with,  and/or experience working in, the field of teacher education; 
  • Knowledge of educational foundations;
  • Knowledge of qualitative research methodology and successful experience as a qualitative researcher;
  • Ability to work with students, staff and faculty in a collegial environment;
  • Ability to multi-task, solve problems and resolve conflicts;
  • Ability to teach and work with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds;
  • Information orientated computer skills;
  • Commitment to the Christian faith and the university’s mission of Christ-centered teaching and learning and involvement in a local church. 

 Preferred:

  • Current knowledge of, and/or experience working in, K-12 schools;
  • Knowledge of a language other than English (Spanish preferred);
  • Successful experience teaching in a teacher education or other graduate education program(s);
  • Knowledge of the Common Core State Standards and Assessments.

Compensation:

Dependent on qualifications and experience, and paid out over 12 months. Full-time benefits include insurance (medical, vision, dental, LTD), retirement (TIAA-CREF), Section 125 options.
