Choral Ensembles

Concert Choir - Milt Friesen, conductor

As the university's premier vocal group, this auditioned group of 40-50 men and women perform widely at schools, churches, on tour and at choral festivals. Music comes from all periods, Classical to the 21st Century, a cappella and accompanied, with the primary focus on sacred texts.

Crosswind - Melita Zubacz, conductor

A new sound blew into campus during the 2006-2007 school year with the creation of this troupe of singers and instrumentalists. The ensemble performs two genres of contemporary music: European-influenced choral anthems and African-influenced praise and worship music, the latter featuring guitars and drums to provide a backbeat.

San Joaquin Chorale - Roy Klassen, conductor

This auditioned choir maintains an outreach to the community and a connection for alumni who want to continue singing at a professional level. The 60-plus members perform sacred and secular music at Christmas and spring concerts.

Vocal Performance Workshop | Opera at Pacific - Deborah Sauer-Ferrand, director

This group presents staged performances chosen from musical theater and operatic works.

Instrumental Ensembles

Symphonic Band - Erik Leung, conductor

Comprised of approximately 40 major and non-major musicians from across campus, the Symphonic Band performs a wide variety of wind band repertoire at a high level. With a focus on nurturing musical growth through performance, the band can be heard both on and off campus in a variety of venues.

Jazz Ensemble - Alan Durst, conductor

Exploration and improvisation are the essence of jazz, and this ensemble honors and builds on that tradition in its constant exploration of the swing, bebop, funk, blues and Latin-jazz forms.

Musica Pacifica Orchestra - Dieter Wulfhorst, conductor

The orchestra performs music from the Baroque to the contemporary periods and brings together the sound of strings, flutes, oboes and harpsichord. Wayne Huber, emeritus faculty, founded the orchestra in 1984.

Pacific Brass - Erik Leung, conductor

The university’s oldest instrumental group, Pacific Brass performs in concert and brings the warm sounds of brass to many campus occasions, including commencement and the honors convocation.

Pacific Bronze - Elizabeth Gonzales, conductor

This handbell choir is made up of 13 musicians ringing five octaves of Malmark handbells and three octaves of Malmark chimes. The group performs sacred and secular music, as well as original compositions for handbells. FPU’s fledgling group, Sunbird Handbell Choir, offers new ringers a chance to learn the fundamentals.

University String Quartet - Dieter Wulfhorst, conductor

Debuting in the fall of 2007, this ensemble performs music from the classical works of Haydn to the music of today, and appears widely in concerts, at special occasions and in an annual live performance on local public radio.

Woodwind Ensembles - Erik Leung, ensemble coordinator

Alan Durst, Jennie Blomster, conductors

The various ensembles perform standard and contemporary woodwind literature, and may include woodwind quintet, sax quartet, flute choir and clarinet choir.
