FAQ's Regarding the Student Network

How do I get connected to the network in my dorm room?

FPU has implemented a registration process for all students who wish to connect a Windows computer to the dorm network as well as the wireless network. A brief set of instructions can be found here. FPU requires that there is a valid and updated anti-virus program installed on all computers before access to the network can be granted as well as all critical Windows updates. Macintosh users do not have to follow these guidelines.

Are students able to send email via SMTP (non-web-based email) from the dorms?

Since email servers only relay messages from users on their own networks, email you send via SMTP from the FPU dorms will not be recognized as being a part of those networks and will therefore not be delivered. This is one means email servers use to prevent spam: not allowing a "free relay." In other words, no, students aren't able to send email via SMTP from the dorms. You can, however, use web-based email in the dorms, including CampusCruiser's email feature.

What are the regulations regarding file sharing in the dorms?

In nearly all cases peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing is considered illegal (e.g. using programs like BearShare, Kazaa and even AIM to transfer files from one computer to another), therefore it is FPU's policy not to allow this type of activity. If our network users were found to be participating in illegal file sharing, the university could be held liable (not to mention that we want to be above reproach in our ethical practices as members of a Christian organization). Therefore, we have installed a device called Audible Magic to block the illegal transfer of copyrighted materials via our network. Files can still be transferred via FTP.

What types of streaming audio/video are available in the dorms?

In an effort to maintain better network performance, we have designated specific ports for streaming audio/video use. Windows Media Player (including the Mac version) is the only streaming audio/video software which will work on those ports. You will want to make sure that your Windows Media Player software communicates via TCP/UDP beginning with port 1755 (consult your software's "help" function if you are unsure how to adjust this setting). You can download the appropriate version of Windows Media Player for your PC or Mac at the following URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/

What types of network monitoring are happening on the student network?

At this time all network traffic, including staff and faculty use, is monitored but not tracked (as is appropriate for all networks so that network administrators can maintain performance standards). The university may at any time initiate policies to enable long term network traffic logging.

What, if any, internet filtering takes place on the network?

The responsible use of technology committee has developed a plan to help sustain the integrity of students and staff while on the campus network. The committee has decided that the following areas be blocked access to all users on the FPU campus network: hacking sites, phishing sites, adult materials, pornography, malware, spyware and spam URLs. Any attempts at accessing these types of sites are logged for educational purposes.

What is the timeframe for wireless to be rolled out to the students on campus?

There are many buildings that currently contain wireless Internet access. For a diagram of where wireless hotspots exist, click here. There are plans to roll out wireless to remaining areas on campus during the current academic year.

What do I need to know about McAfee anti-virus?

FPU has purchased student licenses for all on-campus and dial-up users. This software contains no spyware or keyboard tracking software. Included with McAfee's anti-virus is its EPO software which allows virus definition updates from a local server in lieu of a direct Internet connection, and this feature has been activated within FPU's local network for all local users.

How long are students able to keep their fpu.edu email addresses?

The current time frame for fpu.edu accounts is currently being discussed by several committees. The outcome of those discussions will be communicated to all users once finalized.
