South Africa Short Term Study Abroad

May 19 - June 5, 2015

This study trip will be led by Peter and Cheryl Smith, instructors at FPU. Prior to FPU, they served under Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in Zambia from 2007-2011, including some time spent in South Africa. The trip will focus on appreciating the histories and cultures of South Africa while tracing themes of reconciliation, justice and healing in cross-cultural contexts.

  • Engage the diversity of post-apartheid South Africa.
  • Explore the Apartheid Museum and Soweto Township in Johannesburg.
  • Interact with people working for reconciliation, justice and healing.
  • Experience Table Mountain and Robben Island in Cape Town.
  • Observe African animals up close at a game reserve park.


About $4,000 (incl. subsidy)

TUG scholarship:

A limited number of $500 scholarships will be awarded, primarily on a first-come, first-served basis, to students enrolled in the traditional undergraduate program on the main campus. (Degree completion, graduate and seminary students do not qualify for these scholarships.)

Course credit:

1 – 6 units of credit including all GE Focus Series requirements

Credit (beyond 1 unit) is based upon classes a student wishes to take in Spring 2015 in addition to the trip. Please see your advisor for more details and to make sure you can fit the credits into your program.

Important Dates:

September/October - Informational Meeting 
December 5 - Application deadline with $100 non-refundable deposit
January 1 - Recommended date for applying for U.S. passport (required)
February 15 - $1800 due (airfare)
April 15 - Balance due
