“Words not War”

Students acted from the heart during Building a Culture of Peace Week.

“Words not War” was the theme of the 15th Annual Building a Culture of Peace Week, October 7-11. Organized by the Office of Spiritual Formation, the event offered daily opportunities for the FPU community to learn about issues pertaining to war. Activities included:

  • Egypt in Crisis, documentary and international student panel—Bret Kincaid, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, and Brian Davis, student ministries director (Monday, 2:00 p.m., Steinert Campus Center [SCC])
  • Cluster Bombs—Ken Martens Friesen, Ph.D., associate professor of political science/history (Tuesday, 12:40 p.m., SCC Student Lounge)
  • Victims of War—Darren Duerksen, Ph.D., assistant professor of intercultural studies, and Dina Gonzalez-Pina, assistant dean of multicultural ministries (Wednesday, 12:00 p.m., SCC 103)
  • College Hour—Converting Enemies into Friends—Terry Brensinger, Ph.D., professor pastoral ministry (Wednesday, 10:00 a.m., Special Events Center [SEC])
  • Conscientious Objector: My Response—Jill Schellenberg, Ph.D. candidate, assistant professor of criminology and restorative justice studies, and Larry Dunn, Ph.D., associate professor of peacemaking and conflict studies (Thursday, 12:40 p.m., SCC 122)
  • Peace Prayer Vigil—Donna Callahan, Ph.D. candidate, assistant professor of social work (Thursday, 6:00 p.m., Alumni Plaza)
  • College Hour—From Judgment to Compassion—Terry Brensinger (Friday, 10:00 a.m., SEC)
  • Peace Celebration, Pledge for Peace Drive—Student Clubs (Friday, 11:30 a.m., Alumni Plaza)
