Services for Students with Disabilities: Procedures

Admissions

  1. Applicants with disabilities should complete FPU's standard admission process. If special consideration for a disability is required, please inform the Admissions Office of specific needs; the Admissions Office will refer the applicant to the Student Life Office.
  2. After notifying the Admissions Office of specific disabilites, and upon acceptance for admission, students should submit the following information to the Student Life Office:
    • A recent assessment (see specifics below)
    • A transcript
    • An Individual Education Plan, when available
    • Any other relevant information that would assist in providing appropriate services and accommodations

How to Register for Services
Students are responsible for informing the university of their need for accommodations and services by presenting the Student Life Office with documentation verifying their disability. Students who choose not to self-identify when they enter FPU do not forfeit their right to request and receive services later. However, the university is not obligated to provide accommodations and services for students with disabilities until the student is registered with the Services for Students with Disabilities Office (part of Student Life) and makes known his or her desire for accommodations.

The Services for Students with Disabilities Officer, along with other university personnel, will assist the student in exploring his/her needs and determining the necessary services and accommodations.

  • For learning disabilities, documentation from a qualified professional in the area of the disability (i.e. psychologist, physician or educational diagnostician) is required. This assessment generally must be recent (3 years old or less).
  • For physical or other disabilities, documentation is required from a physician or other qualified professional.

We encourage students with disabilities to contact the Services for Students with Disabilities Officer in the Student Life Office to discuss academic and other needs before the beginning of their first semester or as soon as they are diagnosed with a disability. Once documentation is on file, arrangements for reasonable accommodations can be made.

Students' names and the nature of disabilities will be kept confidential, except in cases where the information is vital to providing services and/or accommodations requested by a student.
