Biblical and Religious Studies

FPU is committed to a biblical record as a primary source of direction for both personal and corporate Christian life. Students enrolled in the biblical and religious studies major are exposed to a wide range of courses in the Bible, theology and church history.

Distinctive Features

Building directly upon foundations established in the "Stories of Peoples and Cultures" sequence of general education courses, this major offers three traditional emphases:

Biblical and Religious Studies - Religious Studies Emphasis

The religious studies emphasis examines various aspects of religion in general and teaches students how to approach discussions of contemporary topics.

Biblical and Religious Studies - Theology and Ethics Emphasis

Theology encompasses a system of religious beliefs and teachings, often outlining a set of ethical standards that must be upheld. The theology and ethics emphasis explores these systems throughout the world, and throught various periods in history, in order to better understand current beliefs.

Distinctive Features

This emphasis builds on the biblical foundations of the major, discussing a wide range of topics from Latin American religious thought to Mennonite history.

Biblical and Religious Studies Minor

Biblical and religious studies at Fresno Pacific reinforce the traditions that the university was founded on, while exploring the beliefs and traditions of cultures throughout the world. Students learn how to apply biblical teachings in ministry, in work and in other daily activities.

Distinctive Features

This minor exposes students to a wide range of topics in Bible, theology and church history.

Spanish Language and Culture

The Spanish language, though in various dialects, is spoken across the country and throughout the world. Thus, a deep understanding of this language and the cultures from which it originates is a vital part of a global perspective, and is of value in a wide range of professions.

Distinctive Features

While many Spanish programs focus solely on the language, the Spanish language and culture major at FPU offers a choice of focus through two emphases:

Spanish Language and Culture - Latin American Cultures

Latin America consists of many individual countries, each with a unique history, and each with a uniqe culture. The Latin American cultures emphasis exposes students to some of these cultures, exploring their differences from each other, and from American ways of life.

Spanish Language and Culture - Spanish Language

Spanish is one of the most recognizable languages spoken today-nationally and across the globe. While there are dozens of varying dialects, a basic understanding of the language is invaluable.

Distinctive Features

This emphasis requires at least one semester abroad, providing an intense, interactive environment for studying the Spanish language.

Students learn and explore during History Day (video link)

More than 400 students grades four and up participated in Fresno County History Day March 19, at the main FPU campus.

Communication

The communication major approaches various topics from a broad, liberal arts perspective that includes the historical, philosophical, and theoretical roots of communication. Each course provides foundational knowledge necessary for successful work and service in the public, private and religious sectors, as well as in future graduate studies.

Communication Minor

Communication encompasses a broad skill set that is critical to almost any role people fill in the workplace, the church or in society overall. The communication minor equips students with this skill set, helping develop an understanding of successful communication processes and practices.
