Father of Christian community development brings message of hope

John M. Perkins loves the young people—and has a job for them.

“This is the first generation that values difference; that sees it as an asset,” Perkins told students, faculty and staff at College Hour chapel March 15 in the Special Events Center.

Preacher brings passion to College Hour

Robert Smith, Jr., took the mic in College Hour guest January 18—but he didn’t need it.

Smith is professor of divinity and Christian preaching at Beeson Divinity School at Samford University. He does research on passion in preaching, and put that passion into practice for students, faculty and staff in the Special Events Center.

New president speaks of hope at opening convocation

President Pete Menjares brought a message of hope in his first President’s Convocation.

“This university has gone through significant changes in the past five to seven years,” Menjares told a full house of students, faculty and staff August 29 in the Special Events Center on the main campus. The name of his presentation, and the theme for the academic year, is “Abounding in Hope in Times of Change.”

A trio of campus leaders who started from very different places told how they got where they are today at the 2012 Provost’s Convocation January 11.

Stephen Varvis, interim provost and vice president of enrollment management; Nayely Carlos (BA ‘08), admissions advisor; and Karen Cianci, dean of the School of Natural Sciences, spoke to students, faculty and staff during the event, the first College Hour chapel presentation of the semester, in the Special Events Center on the main campus.
