With the high volume of solicitations for credit cards, cellular phones and loan consolidation, many student borrowers may be asking, "How can I make this stop?" or "How did they get my name?"

In compliance with the Higher Education Act and applicable regulations, lenders are required to report borrowers' credit histories to at least one national credit bureau. A student borrower trying to establish good credit can benefit from having payment history released to a credit bureau. However, credit bureau reporting opens the door for unwanted solicitations.

Students may borrow up to $18,500 per year in federally sponsored student loans. The loan amount borrowed cannot exceed the student's calculated need level or financial aid cost of attendance (tuition + living expenses).

Subsidized loans are available to students who demonstrate financial need based on the information provided on the FAFSA. The government pays the interest while the student is enrolled at least half-time in school.
