Chris Brownell will help public school teachers learn while he earns a doctorate.
The FPU Board of Trustees granted Brownell, a member of the mathematics education faculty since 2000, a leave of absence at its June 10-11 meetings so he can be part of the TEAMES (Teachers Employing Applied Mathematics to Engage Students) grant at Claremont Graduate University.
FPU's minor in mathematics provides students with a condensed and highly-focused program in mathematics as a complement to other majors, as well as a fulfillment of personal interest.
The mathematics program at Fresno Pacific University is designed to prepare students to solve problems, communicate their understanding and appreciate the beauty of mathematics and its role in human history.
The bachelor of science degree in applied mathematics is appropriate for those students who want to focus their energies in the area of applications of mathematics. The B.S.degee is for those students who may seek careers in industry or engineering or may be considering graduate school in the applied sciences. This degree includes a research capstone.
The total coursework requirements include a minimum of 55 units of mathematics, computer science, chemistry and physics beyond the general education prerequisites.
The bachelor of arts degree in mathematics is designed to provide students with a broad spectrum of coursework in the mathematical sciences. It is intended to give students a sense of the human story and the philosophical underpinning of mathematics. This is the recommended major for those students intending to go into secondary teaching, but is not intended to be limited to these students alone. There are more elective options for a B.A. and more room for the students to incorporate a minor field of study.

With a 41-foot pendulum counting to the future, a new era in mathematics and science officially arrived at Fresno Pacific University.
More than 200 students, faculty, staff, guests and news media packed the lobby and second-floor balcony of AIMS Hall of Mathematics and Science for dedication ceremonies October 11. The two-story, 20,097 square-foot building opened in August and includes laboratories for biology, physics, chemistry and research as well as classrooms, a library and faculty offices.
