First Worldview Forum discusses Christians and politics (video link)

Fresno Pacific hosted its first Worldview Forum on Tuesday, October 16. Speakers Steve Varvis, Ph.D, FPU provost, and Bret Kincaid, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, offered different perspectives on Christians and politics. The Worldview Forum will happen once every semester, with the next one set for February 26. 

FPU continues to be a part of the Big Fresno Fair (video link)

Over the last several years, Fresno Pacific has sponsored the Christian concerts held at The Big Fresno Fair. This year, on Tuesday, October 9, members from FPU hosted a booth set up by the Paul Paul stadium. University Pastor Angulus Wilson - along with our Sunny the Sunbird - introduced the night’s concert event: Jamie Grace and TobyMac.

Jonathan Maher

Jonathan Maher, director of systems analysis, co-presented a session titled “Extending the Platform Across the Campus” September 21 as part of Dreamforce, the world’s largest vendor technology conference. His co-presenter was Robert Lamb of the Salesforce Foundation. FPU uses Salesforce as a customer relationship management platform for a variety of offices.

Cory Seibel, Ph.D.

Cory Seibel, Ph.D., assistant professor of pastoral ministries, has had a busy summer:

He presented two workshops at the Christian Community Development Association national convention in Minneapolis September 28-29: “On Common Ground: Nurturing a Cooperative Spirit in a Competitive Space” and “It’s All About Me: Narcissism, Leadership, and Christian Community Development.”

In August, he joined the board of Hands On Central California, an organization that fosters volunteerism in the Fresno, Kings, Tulare and Madera counties.

Senior Day raises excitement for December grads (video link)

Senior Day, a collaboration of the Career Services Center, Registrar’s Office, FPU Alumni Association and Pacific Bookshop, was held Wednesday, October 3. Students graduating in December received a free t-shirt, signed up for raffles and, most important, got excited for the end of their college journey. Career Services offers guidance for students (video link)

October 2 FPU’s Career Services Office hosted Resumania! The event was to instruct students on how to write an effective resumé that will help them launch their careers. There are other events throughout the semester to guide students into the job market, including an internship workshop and mock interviews. To find out more, check out fresno.edu/careerservices, or drop by career service in the Student Life Office. 

Traditional undergraduate enrollment tops 1,200

Traditional undergraduate enrollment passed a milestone in the fall of 2012, surpassing 1,200 for the first time in the school’s 68-year history.

Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary enrollment also grew, from 116 in 2011 to 143 in 2012. A total of 3,460 students study at the main FPU campus and at centers in Merced, North Fresno, Visalia and Bakersfield, down from 3,603 in the fall of 2011.

Happy birthday Hiebert Library

University break October 5 was a celebration of Hiebert Library’s 50th birthday.

The building opened in October 1962 as the fourth, and largest, structure on a campus that was only two years old. The library was named for Cornelius Hiebert, who gave the major gift for construction. John and Maria Lohrenz, missionaries in India, were also large contributors.

Pete Menjares inaugurated 11th president of FPU (video link)

Song and praise celebrated the inauguration of Pete C. Menjares, Ph.D.

“Better is One Day”—the song and the psalm that inspired it—summed up inauguration week September 24-28.

Crosswind, a student ensemble, performed the song at College Hour chapel Wednesday and the banquet Thursday. Menjares made Psalm 84 the theme of his speech at the inauguration ceremony Friday.

David Bruce Rose, Ph.D.

David Bruce Rose, Ph.D., associate professor, marriage, family and child counseling, led a sexual assault prevention training session for Air National Guard chaplains and chaplain assistants September 10-13 at McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base, near Knoxville, Tennessee. Sherry Walling, Ph.D., was the other facilitator. A former assistant professor of psychology at FPU, she is currently a member of the adjunct faculty.
