Calling can be heard in unexpected ways (video link)

A trio of campus leaders who started from very different places told how they got where they are today at the 2012 Provost’s Convocation January 11.

Stephen Varvis, interim provost and vice president of enrollment management; Nayely Carlos (BA ‘08), admissions advisor; and Karen Cianci, dean of the School of Natural Sciences, spoke to students, faculty and staff during the event, the first College Hour chapel presentation of the semester, in the Special Events Center on the main campus.  

Donte Nicholas recognized as GSAC player of the week

The Fresno Pacific Sunbird men’s and women’s basketball teams have begun their GSAC Conference games and are off to a promising start.

FPU senior, Donte Nicholas, was recognized as the first GSAC player of the week for his outstanding performance on the court. In his first three games with the team, Nicholas led the nationally-ranked Sunbirds to three victories at the Las Vegas Classic, leading the team in scoring with 18.8 points per game.

Online professional development course explores the biblical Tabernacle

A personal interest in the biblical tabernacle has resulted in an unusual online course through the FPU Center for Professional Development (CPD).

“About five years ago I fell in love with study of the Tabernacle. It’s been a brewing thing in my heart for some time,” said Marvin Harms. Harms joined forces with Elmer Martens to create a series of four lectures of 30-40 minutes each that is available for 2 units of credit through the FPU Center for Professional Development. The content is available for free, or 2 units of credit are available for a fee.

The arc of history bends towards justice

Martin Luther King, Jr., spoke of the future with hope. Despite the difficulties and dangers faced by him and others working for human equality, King kept faith—in God, people and the possibility of a better world. Ken Martens Friesen, associate professor of history and political science at Fresno Pacific University, examines how we’re doing 44 years later and sees hope as well in this Scholars Speak.

Not all leaders are created equal, judge tells graduates (video link)

There are leaders—and then there are leaders.

That was the message Fresno County Superior Court Judge Robert H. Oliver gave to the newest FPU graduates at fall commencement on Saturday, December 17.

FPU continues to increase investment in students, programs and facilities in 2012

To keep Valley students and families investing in higher education, FPU continues to keep tuition below national averages and increase services students need to succeed. 

“A high-quality private education can be affordable,” said Stephen Varvis, FPU vice president for enrollment management. “Fresno Pacific has the faculty, academic programs, facilities and financial aid to make this happen.”

Celebrating Christmas with tradition

We all have family Christmas-time traditions. Two of the most beloved celebrations at Fresno Pacific are the Carol Sing and ‘Twas the Night Before Finals.

Carol Sing is a longstanding tradition of song and celebration. Friday, December 9, staff, faculty and students joined for a morning of Christmas caroling. Student musicians sharing their talents included Pacific Brass, led by Wayne Huber; Pacific Bronze bell choir, led by Elizabeth Gonzales; and Crosswind Choir, led by Milt Friesen.

Christmas stockings—and shoes to go with them

FPU and Spirit 88.9 FM are again giving a free pair of shoes and socks to every child at two area elementary schools.

Students at Washington Elementary in Visalia got their shoes December 12, and students at Muir Elementary, Fresno, get theirs December 19. Staff members from the main campus, North Fresno Center and Visalia Center are helping, along with community members.
