Spanish Language and Culture - Spanish Language

Spanish is one of the most recognizable languages spoken today-nationally and across the globe. While there are dozens of varying dialects, a basic understanding of the language is invaluable.

Distinctive Features

This emphasis requires at least one semester abroad, providing an intense, interactive environment for studying the Spanish language.

Intercultural Studies

The intercultural studies major prepares students for living and working within cultures different from their own. Students develop a broadened perspective and the knowledge needed to function and serve in our inter-dependent global society.

Distinctive Features

This major is built around a core set of interdisciplinary courses designed to give a broad understanding of the world and connections between societies. It offers two emphases:

Contemporary Christian Ministries

Ministry, put simply, is an act (or acts) of service to others. Expanding on this definition, the contemporary Christian ministries major prepares graduates for ministry by focusing on specific needs and roles in church and para-church organizations. Thus, this major is designed for students with an interest in practical forms of service in church and para-church ministries.

Language Studies Minor

Linguistics encompasses the study of human language as a universal feature of human behavior and thinking.

Social Work

For centuries Christian ministry has included social work. The social work major at FPU continues that tradition, encouraging a commitment to social justice and a life of service. The major educates students in counseling individuals, couples and families, working with groups, facilitating individual and social change, and developing new services for people in need.

Music - Performance/Composition Emphasis

The popularity of music is-and always has been-a major cultural influence throughout the world. Music can speak to current trends and styles, or it can retell history. The performance/composition offers students core music principles, and train each musician to develop a unique style based on these principles.

Music - Church Music Emphasis

Church music, though often similar in composition to many traditional and modern styles of music, incorporates unique elements and therefore requires specialized talents. This emphasis provides training for leadership in church music departments.

Intercultural Studies - Topics Emphasis

The topics emphasis enables students to investigate different cultures from various perspectives and disciplines.

Intercultural Studies - Mission/Service Emphasis

The missions/service emphasis builds on core concepts of the intercultural studies major and prepares students for work and service throughout the world.

Distinctive Features

Required courses in the missions/service emphasis build theological and economic frameworks for working across cultures.

History

The study of human history is a necessary step if we hope to create a meaningful context for consideration of life today. The History major at FPU helps students gain a broad perspective and develop critical understanding and insight into cultures and events of the past, present and future. Our classes are taught almost entirely by PhD scholars in relevant fields. The curriculum at both lower and upper division levels is designed to provide both breadth of historical survey and depth of analysis through varieties of evidence.
