The Fresno Pacific University Board of Trustees has selected a candidate for the university presidency.
Pete Menjares, Ph.D., was approved by the board January 27 on recommendation of the presidential search committee. He currently serves as Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Academic Effectiveness at Biola University.

Ministry education with an Anabaptist and evangelical theme is going online through Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary. First classes planned for fall 2012.
Lynn Jost, seminary dean and vice president and dean of Fresno Pacific University, is directing the creation of a two-step online program. First will come eight courses students can take for 3 units of credit each, or audit them. (These courses will fulfill Mennonite Brethren denominational credentials for pastors.) Part two will consist of making these courses part of a 39-unit master of arts degree in ministry.

The FPU Marriage, Family and Children’s Counseling program is coming to Visalia in fall 2012—and the opportunities are wide open. “I’m excited,” said program director David Rose. “We’re going to do it well.”
“There has been a long history of demand for counseling the way we do it—Christ-centered—in the South Valley,” Rose said. Students from Visalia to Bakersfield already attend MFCC classes on the Fresno main campus, and the region has a shortage of mental health professionals.

A trio of campus leaders who started from very different places told how they got where they are today at the 2012 Provost’s Convocation January 11.
Stephen Varvis, interim provost and vice president of enrollment management; Nayely Carlos (BA ‘08), admissions advisor; and Karen Cianci, dean of the School of Natural Sciences, spoke to students, faculty and staff during the event, the first College Hour chapel presentation of the semester, in the Special Events Center on the main campus.

The Fresno Pacific Sunbird men’s and women’s basketball teams have begun their GSAC Conference games and are off to a promising start.
FPU senior, Donte Nicholas, was recognized as the first GSAC player of the week for his outstanding performance on the court. In his first three games with the team, Nicholas led the nationally-ranked Sunbirds to three victories at the Las Vegas Classic, leading the team in scoring with 18.8 points per game.

A personal interest in the biblical tabernacle has resulted in an unusual online course through the FPU Center for Professional Development (CPD).
“About five years ago I fell in love with study of the Tabernacle. It’s been a brewing thing in my heart for some time,” said Marvin Harms. Harms joined forces with Elmer Martens to create a series of four lectures of 30-40 minutes each that is available for 2 units of credit through the FPU Center for Professional Development. The content is available for free, or 2 units of credit are available for a fee.

We all have family Christmas-time traditions. Two of the most beloved celebrations at Fresno Pacific are the Carol Sing and ‘Twas the Night Before Finals.
Carol Sing is a longstanding tradition of song and celebration. Friday, December 9, staff, faculty and students joined for a morning of Christmas caroling. Student musicians sharing their talents included Pacific Brass, led by Wayne Huber; Pacific Bronze bell choir, led by Elizabeth Gonzales; and Crosswind Choir, led by Milt Friesen.

FPU and Spirit 88.9 FM are again giving a free pair of shoes and socks to every child at two area elementary schools.
Students at Washington Elementary in Visalia got their shoes December 12, and students at Muir Elementary, Fresno, get theirs December 19. Staff members from the main campus, North Fresno Center and Visalia Center are helping, along with community members.
