Making the world a better place and generating a sustainable income at the same time is not a dream—it’s a plan. And #SoEnt is the place to learn about it.

#SoEnt, “Social Entrepreneurship for the Common Good,” will be Thursday, April 6, 2017, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Butler Church, 4884 E. Butler Ave., Fresno. The meeting of local college students, business professionals, church people and entrepreneurs will look at social entrepreneurship, talk about opportunities and meet people who are changing our community, one business at a time. Register on Eventbrite.

The event is sponsored by the Center for Community Transformation (CCT) at Fresno Pacific Biblical Seminary and the Fresno Pacific School of Business. Speakers and workshops will explore how the resources of faith institutions and businesses can focus their talents and skills to go beyond charity to employ people with barriers and create a flourishing community.

The plenary speaker will be Bryan Feil, CEO of Lanna Coffee, a social business that also funds clean water and economic development projects. Workshops include:

  • “Local Social Enterprises Tell Their Stories,” with Eddie Valero, executive director, Young Men’s Institute, Orosi.

  • “How to Get Started with Hardly Any Money,” with Andrew Shinn, Fresno consultant, entrepreneur, teacher.

  • “Why Not You? Start a Business. Impact a Community,” with Jake Soberal, co-founder and co-CEO, Bitwise Industries, Fresno.

CCT connects the strengths of Fresno Pacific University with the resources of the region to transform cities. “The center supports entrepreneurial creativity, spiritual freedom, economic vitality and justice, environmental integrity, cross-cultural/social collaboration and political health in the Central Valley,” according to Randy White, D.Min., CCT executive director and associate professor of community transformation.
