Larry Warkentin, D.M.A.

The 10-minute work was commissioned as part of the Sound in the Land conference at the college June 5-9, 2014. The variations—ranging in style from Bach to blues—are on "Nun ist sie erschienen" ("The Sun has now risen") a German-language hymn written in America by Wilhelm Horn in 1884, with a tune by James R. Murray. This hymn was a favorite of German-Russian Mennonites arriving in America at the time. "I selected this hymn because the theme of the conference is music and the environment and the reference to the rising sun seemed appropriate," Warkentin said. The concert will be in Hagey Hall at the University of Waterloo and played by the Waterloo Chamber Orchestra conducted by Ben Bolt-Martin.
