Fresno Pacific University postpones home athletics, prays for healing

The volleyball match between Fresno Pacific University and California Baptist University, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Saturday, September 15, has been postponed.

The announcement followed a special remembrance service around the flagpole at the FPU Special Events Center. At 7:30 this morning about 100 members of the Fresno Pacific University community, including faculty, staff and students, participated in the special prayer vigil. Those gathered paid their respects to those lost and affected by the tragedy of this past Tuesday. The somber gathering, which coincided with President Bush's setting aside today as a day of prayer and remembrance, included scripture reading, hymns and appeals for peace and healing.

FPU Athletic Director Gary Nachtigall noted that the university cross country teams and the men's soccer squad are expected to compete on the road this weekend in games already rescheduled due to the week's events. "We will fulfill our obligations," said Nachtigall. "As for Saturday's volleyball match, it was our only home event of the week, the one event we felt we had control of. We wish to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania by postponing."

Nachtigall and California Baptist representatives hope to make an announcement early next week regarding a reschedule date.
