KVPR to broadcast music of FPU faculty

A work by a Fresno Pacific University faculty member will be presented on KVPR Valley Public Radio.

"Sonata for Flute and Piano," composed by Larry Warkentin and performed by Warkentin and Janette Erickson will air at 10 p.m. October 30. Erickson is university faculty and principal flutist with the Fresno Philharmonic. Warkentin is an award-winning composer who has served FPU since 1966.

The sonata contains three contrasting movements: the first is lively and in traditional sonata form, while the second unfolds slowly in a bittersweet mood. The finale is a raucous samba, reflecting Warkentin's visit to Rio de Janeiro.

The composition premiered October 6, 2000, during a concert at the university. The CD recording was engineered by John Warkentin of the Fresno Pacific Media Center. Recordings of this sonata, as well as Warkentin's "Sonata No. 2, Reflections on Reedley at Mid-century," featuring John Mortensen as piano soloist, may be purchased in the university Music Office.
