An article by Tim Geddert, Ph.D., professor of New Testament, “The Implied YHWH Christology of Mark’s Gospel: Mark’s Challenge to the Reader to ‘Connect the Dots’,” has been published in Bulletin for Biblical Research, vol 25.3 (2015). The article holds that Mark’s Gospel presents Jesus explicitly as the Messiah, the Son of God. The characters in the story may not all recognize this about Jesus, but the reader is clearly told these things. However, Mark’s Gospel also hints that Jesus is more than Messiah and Son of God. It hints that Jesus is fully divine, the embodied presence of Israel’s God (Yahweh) on earth. Readers are invited to watch for the clues and “connect the dots,” so that the “hidden message” is also discovered within the text.
