Position Summary

The Director of Planned Gifts is responsible for designing and implementing all planned giving components of the university’s development program. The director will lead in the identifying, cultivating, and soliciting of planned giving prospects. The director will work collaboratively with advancement directors, staff, FPU Foundation board and staff, and other university employees who have contact with donors to nurture prospects’ interest and understanding of the university mission and to develop and present prospective donors with appropriate charitable gift plan proposals. The director is also responsible for assisting with the development of written materials as marketing pieces for planned giving, and for supervising any other planned giving officers. The Director serves as a major gifts officer, working in collaboration with the Director of major gifts and corporate relations

Areas of Focus

  • Identify, engage, and solicit donors for the purpose of securing planned gifts.
  • Work collaboratively with advancement directors to strategize and execute planned and blended gifts.
  • Design and coordinate the planned giving program for the university.

Duties

  • Manage a portfolio of high level donors and prospects toward increasing the support of the university.
  • Design, implement and coordinate the planned giving component of the university’s development program toward the comprehensive campaign, including web-based strategies.
  • Using the established fundraising priorities set by the university administration and board of trustees, the director of planned giving will develop goals and strategies to realize lead and planned gifts for each component of the comprehensive campaign, and for the work of other university planned giving officers.
  • Coordinate donor and prospect contact with other university advancement officers, utilizing the university’s constituent relationship management system.
  • Assist the VP for advancement and executive director of the Foundation in establishing appropriate giving levels, naming options and donor recognition for all university campaigns.
  • Conduct prospect research to mine the university database and external sources for potential planned gift prospects.
  • Develop strategies for the engagement of people with the capacity for planned gifts to the university by the university president, VP for advancement and executive director of the Foundation, other administrators, and board members.
  • Expand the university’s reach of donors to regional, national and international philanthropists.
  • Manage and increase participation in the Heritage Society.
  • Represent the university by attending fundraising and donor cultivation events.
  • Prepare and deliver reports to the FPU Foundation Board of Directors and its Planned Gift Prospects and Receipt Committee as requested.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to the Christian mission of the University.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, related professional education or certificate (CSPG, CFRM, CFRE) preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of successful planned giving fundraising experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience using appropriate planned giving software.
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of best practices in fundraising and evaluation of outcomes.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and executing strategic fundraising plans.
  • Strong relationship builder capable of interacting with potential and major donors.
  • Strong interpersonal written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with enterprise application and/or customer relationship management software (Ellucian Colleague Advancement and/or Salesforce is preferred).
  • Proven expertise in working collaboratively with a diverse range of constituents staff, board, faculty, students, alumni, denominational, civic and corporate leaders, and friends of the university.
  • Proficient in using standard office software, such as WORD, POWERPOINT, EXCEL and OUTLOOK.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated management capabilities.
  • Up-to-date on current and ongoing tax laws affecting planned giving
  • Ability to travel as necessary for out-of-town appointments, meetings and conferences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

  • Indoors in normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes at least eighty percent (80%) of the time.
  • Frequent computer use at workstation, up to eight hours per day.
  • Frequently work at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions.
  • Drive personal or university vehicle to appointments.
  • Public contact position requiring professional apparel and personal hygiene.

Physical Demands

  • Attendance and punctuality.
  • Mobility within the office. Ability to walk, sit, stand, and climb stairs. Ability to use hands and fingers, to handle office equipment, records and files. Occasionally required to reach with arms and hands, and to stoop, kneel or crouch. Vision abilities required by this job include the ability to read and discern written errors on paper and electronic documents. Ability to talk and hear. Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.
  • Valid California driver’s license and ability to drive to various appointments.
