Leading the Future of Healthcare: A Path for Working Professionals

May 19, 2026

By Sharon Starcher

If you’re already working in healthcare and wondering what’s next, you’re not alone. What does it take to move into a leadership role today?

Healthcare is changing quickly. New technologies, evolving regulations and increasing expectations for quality care are reshaping the field every day.

Many professionals reach a point where experience alone isn’t enough to move forward. That’s often when people start looking at a healthcare administration degree as a way to step into leadership without starting over.

Behind every hospital, clinic or community health organization are people managing operations, guiding teams and helping systems run well. For working professionals, that creates a real opportunity to grow into those roles.

What Is Healthcare Administration?

Healthcare administration focuses on the leadership and decision-making that keep healthcare organizations running smoothly. Whether in a private practice or a larger medical setting, professionals in this field develop, plan and manage operations while navigating policies, resources and regulations. Through this work, they play a key role in improving efficiency and supporting quality patient care.

For adult learners, it can feel like a natural next step. Instead of leaving your experience behind, you build on it. You learn how to lead teams, improve systems and make decisions that support both patients and providers.

What Can You Do with a Healthcare Administration Degree?

A healthcare administration degree within the Bachelor of Business Administration can lead to a range of leadership roles.

These roles aren’t about starting from scratch. They’re about moving forward. Graduates often step into positions like:

  • Hospital or department administrator
  • Healthcare operations manager
  • Medical office leader
  • Program coordinator
  • Quality improvement specialist

Skills You Can Use Right Away

Through courses like Healthcare Politics and Ethics, Quality Management in Healthcare, Information Technology in Healthcare and a Healthcare Research project, students develop skills they can use in real time.

Coursework focuses on:

  • Leadership and decision-making
  • Communication
  • Critical thinking
  • Cultural awareness
  • Understanding healthcare systems

Many students notice quickly that what they’re learning in the classroom starts to show up in their day-to-day work.

A Growing Field with Lasting Impact

Healthcare organizations are dealing with constant change. Regulations, technology and expectations around care continue to evolve.

Because of that, there’s a growing need for people who understand both how healthcare works and how to lead within it. Professionals who already have experience and add formal training are often in a strong position to move into those roles.

Leadership in this space also comes with impact. It’s not just about career growth, it’s about improving systems, supporting teams and helping care run more effectively.

Designed with Working Adults in Mind

Going back to school while working and managing life responsibilities is a big decision.

Degree completion programs are built with that in mind. With flexible formats and practical coursework, students are able to continue working while they learn.

For many people, that makes the idea of going back to school feel possible.
