At Fresno Pacific University, we’ve seen firsthand how higher education transforms lives, strengthens communities and opens doors to opportunities that last a lifetime. We know by what our alumni tell us and by our #1 ranking for social mobility by The Wall Street Journal that an FPU education is worth it. So we’re celebrating the personal, professional and community impact of earning a degree through the voices of four remarkable FPU alumni. Their stories show how the investment in education pays off not just in careers, but in purpose, leadership, service and the ability to make a difference.

Nick Valla (BA ‘17) is currently assistant township manager for Middletown Township (located in Bucks County in suburban Philadelphia, PA). When asked how FPU helped prepare him, Nick said, “My experience as president of the Student Government Association prepared me well for a career in local government management, exposing me to opportunities to advocate for others and breaking down barriers between people and a large and complex institution.”

Angela Tos (MA '02, BA '98) is the vice president of student services for Coalinga College. Her time at FPU shaped the way she approaches leadership and teamwork, teaching her the importance of building strong relationships within a team and the power of leading through service. To Angela, "true transformation happens when we invest in others and our community. More than anything, I believe actions speak louder than words—they define the work we do and the lives we lead. Above all, I hope to be remembered for my kindness and the way I make others feel valued in their work and educational journeys."

Kevin Albertson (MA '22) is the chief of the Bakersfield Fire Department. Chief Albertson has reflected that his degree from FPU in Strategic and Organizational Leadership has equipped him with the skills necessary to guide the Bakersfield Fire Department through change, growth and crisis. This education has refined his abilities in critical areas such as strategic planning, team building, communication, conflict resolution and organizational development. Above all, this education has underscored the importance of making data-informed decisions, inspiring and empowering staff, and driving innovation to better serve the public.

Mario Gonzalez (BA ’07) wasn’t sure if he’d finish what he started at FPU. After attending and even walking at graduation, he had only two classes remaining to complete his degree, but he never made it to finals. One day, he received a call from Richard Unruh, Ph.D., political science professor and himself a 1976 graduate, who wanted to make sure his former student was doing okay. “He motivated me to return and finish my classes,” Mario says. “His encouragement and support helped me come back and complete my degree.” Mario ended up graduating with a B.A. in Prelaw/Criminal Justice before going on to earn a Juris Doctorate from San Joaquin College of Law. He is now the executive director at Education and Leadership Foundation.
