A New Season of Music at FPU

December 2, 2025

By Carrie Vail

My name is Carrie Vail, and I’m the newest member of the music program faculty here at FPU.

I direct the choir, teach voice lessons and some other music classes as needed. Moving to California from Ohio was a big change for me and my family. Getting used to new weather patterns, and a different culture has been challenging, but I’m so glad to be here! I have loved getting to know the students here and helping them to grow as musicians already this year.

Choral music is especially near to my heart as we get to share a range of texts with our audience. This school year’s theme in Concert Choir is "hope," which has allowed us to explore many beautiful and sometimes difficult words. We are a small group right now, which has allowed us to connect deeply with each other and the music. I’m also grateful for the handful of community members who have come alongside our students to support and bolster our sound.

This year things are going to look a bit different when it comes to the music program’s winter concert. Instead of doing a Lessons & Carols style presentation as has been done in the past, the Concert Choir, our Community Band and guests will be celebrating advent, Christmas and wintertime through music. We know that it won’t be what folks typically expect, but we hope to feature students and community members well and share our love of the season’s music with the audience. There is no cost to attend, so come and support music and the FPU community on in the Warkentine Culture and Arts Center.

Our music program is small but mighty! I am impressed by the hard work that students are willing to put in to make wonderful music together. My biggest hope is that the love of music will spread through our campus and draw in other students and community folks who want to participate.

I would love to see both the choir and band grow in the coming spring semester! All students are welcome to join—you don’t have to be a music major or minor—we want everyone to be able to share their musical gifts and grow as performers. If you’re interested in joining either group (or have a desire to study music as a major or minor), please reach out to me!
