More Than a Degree: What College Means to My Family
More Than a Degree: What College Means to My Family

Being a first-generation college student never came lightly to me.
It has been part of my identity since I registered for my first college class at 17 years old.
Did I know it would take this long or be this hard? No, I didn’t. But I understood that the sacrifices I made would eventually bring me closer to my goals and aspirations in life. I wholeheartedly understood that I was setting a standard for the generations to come.
Watching My Mom Work
I watched my mom quite literally work seven days a week. Our vacations were often based around where work took her. At the time, we never noticed, but as an adult, I appreciate how hard she worked to give us a childhood filled with faith, a loving home, and stability. We never knew how much she struggled because she never made us feel like we couldn’t have or accomplish something. She pushed us to do more. She often talked about how her own circumstances as a teenager were not ideal, but she never allowed them to stop her. She provided, she persevered, and she excelled.
My Dad, My Coach
My dad always reminded me that if I had heart, I could accomplish anything I put my mind to. He was not only my dad but also my coach and sometimes my biggest cheerleader. He taught me that if I worked a job I loved, the rest would fall into place. He watched the History Channel with me, showed me the importance of showing up even on the tough days, and taught me that even when something is hard, it is worth it. My dad’s encouragement carried me through some of my toughest classes, and my mom’s prayers kept faith at the center of my education.
Thanking My Mom and Dad
Being a first-generation college student and soon-to-be graduate means everything to me. It is my way of thanking my mom and dad for every sacrifice they made. It is also a way to celebrate their parenting and show them that all their hard work paid off, even if the degree has my name on it.
I wholeheartedly understood that I was setting a standard for the generations to come.

Finding My Calling
Being a Nina and an aunt has also played a big role in shaping who I am. The love, patience, and responsibility that come with those roles have helped me realize how much I enjoy working with children. Over time, those experiences, along with my own journey, helped me find my calling within the school district. My goal is to become a teacher and work with high school students, helping them grow both inside and outside the classroom. I hope to be the kind of teacher who makes students feel supported, encouraged, and seen. More than anything, I want my students to know that they have someone in their corner and that they are capable of more than they may realize.
Honoring Where I Came From
All of this has reminded me that this journey is about more than earning a degree. It is about honoring where I came from, recognizing the people who helped me get here, and knowing that every sacrifice will be worth it in the end.
