Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know when it’s time to seek therapy?
- If you notice that you’re not feeling like yourself for more than a week at a time or you’re experiencing changes in your normal level of functioning. If your relationships are suffering, if you suspect that hurts from your past are lingering or want a safe place to process difficult life situations or stressors.
Do all FPU students receive free services?
- Yes, all* FPU students – TUG, GRAD, and DC – have access to 12 counseling sessions per academic year paid for out of student fees. At the end of the free sessions, the student and therapist will work together on a care plan for the student to continue to access supports that fit their circumstances. Students may choose to continue working with their therapist and be responsible for payment for services.
- *The only FPU students who cannot receive services from PCC are graduate students in the Marriage and Family Therapy program because they will work with PCC as part of their academic training.
How much do services cost?
- The first 12 sessions are free to FPU students. Private pay rates range from $80–$125, depending on the experience of the therapist. PCC accepts several forms of insurance, Victims of Crime funding and third-party payers. Please contact us for more information.
What is a care plan?
- A care plan is a collaborative plan between the FPU student and their therapist that identifies other supportive services and strategies to continue to help the student after they have utilized the 12 free sessions of therapy.
Do I have to be a student at FPU to receive services?
- Yes and no. Only enrolled FPU students have access to 12 free sessions with PCC. However, PCC provides services to the public, and anyone is welcome to come to us for services. We see children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. Churches and other Christian nonprofits often refer people to PCC because of our connection to FPU and training in integrating faith and therapy.
Do I have to be a Christian to receive services?
- No. While PCC therapists are trained in the integration of faith in therapy, we work with the whole person—body, mind and spirit. PCC therapists respect the diversity of our community and welcome clients of all faiths or no faith. PCC does not discriminate based on age, gender, race, religious affiliation, sexual orientation or disability.
How do I get started?
- It’s easy to get started! Fill out the contact form on our website at pacificcounselingcenter.org , or leave us a voicemail at (559) 453-8050, and a referral line clinician will contact you to schedule a consultation phone call. During the consultation, they’ll ask questions to understand what is bringing you to therapy, what you hope to get out of it and what your availability is. With that information, they’ll match you with a therapist who will contact you to schedule your first session.
How can I connect my friend/student to PCC?
- If your friend or the student is over the age of 18, provide them with PCC’s contact information and ask them to call. If you are staff or faculty at FPU and have the permission of the student, you may send an email to connect the student with PCC by emailing our referral line at pacific.counseling@fresno.edu. Be sure to cc the student in the email so we can reach out to them directly.
Is it confidential?
- Yes. Services at PCC are classified as health care and are regulated by state and national law. PCC maintains clinical records that are only accessible by PCC personnel and are kept separate from academic records. PCC does not release the names or identifying information of patients without explicit written permission from the patient. PCC is a HIPAA-compliant counseling agency.
- Therapy at PCC is completely confidential except in limited situations which are explained at the outset of counseling.
- PCC counselors are mandated reporters of child abuse, elder abuse and dependent adult abuse.
Tell me about PCC.
- PCC is a training agency for therapists. Our clinicians are actively learning the newest research-based techniques and are in weekly supervision, where they continue to sharpen their therapeutic skills. For clients, this means the clinician they are working with is invested in the treatment process and motivated to provide the best experience possible.
- PCC therapists seek to deliver services with multicultural sensitivity and spiritual integrity. PCC therapists who completed their graduate studies in Marriage and Family Therapy at FPU Biblical Seminary have specific training in integrating Christian faith and counseling. If this integration is of particular interest to you, please mention it to the referral line team member at the time of the initial phone call. That way, we can place you with a therapist who has specialized training.
- PCC does not discriminate based on age, gender, race, religious affiliation, sexual orientation or disability. PCC counselors respect the diversity of our community and welcome clients of all faiths or no faith. PCC counselors provide services within the scope of practice for Marriage and Family Therapists, Clinical Social Workers and Professional Clinical Counselors. Clients with issues outside that scope of practice will be referred to more appropriate services. PCC follows the rules and guidelines of the profession set forth by the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences and the CA Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
