The teacher education program offers credential programs to candidates like you, interested in teaching general education in the elementary and middle school classroom (multiple subjects) and specific subjects at the middle school and high school levels (single subject). After completing the requirements for a preliminary credential, FPU graduates can extend and deepen their understanding of effective teaching strategies and curriculum analysis by enrolling in 12 units of post-credential coursework during the first 5 years of teaching, earning a Master of Arts in Teaching. This program is accredited by the California Commission on Teaching Credentialing (CCTC) and recognized by private schools, as well.

Visalia Residency Program

The Teacher Residency Program was created with you in mind, allowing you to receive your credential in one year, while also receiving guaranteed substitute teaching opportunities every week at a higher pay rate.

Central Valley Teacher Prep Partnership

The CalTeach Program at UC Merced at the Teacher Education Program at FPU have created a partnership that gives you a direct pathway to earn your Single or Multiple Subject Credential. Earn your B.A. or B.S. from UC Merced with a Natural Sciences Education (NSED) minor and receive guaranteed admission to FPU.


  • Become eligible to student teach ro become an intern while you complete your credential
  • Guaranteed admission for those who complete the NSED minor
  • Substitute up to 11 units of coursework so you can finish faster and save money
Education Scholarships, Grants & Loans

Cal Grant: If you utilized your Cal Grant in undergrad, you may be eligible to renew your grant an additional year if you are seeking your teaching credential. Talk to your student financial services advisor for more information.

Federal Pell Grant: If you are seeking your teaching credential, you can qualify. You qualify for this grant based on financial aid.

Hispanic College Scholarship Fund: If you are of Hispanic heritage, you are eligible to receive scholarship assistance.

Church-Match Scholarship: FPU will match dollar-for-dollar up to $500 per semester for churches belonging to the Pacific District Conference of Mennonite Brethren Churches. $250 per semester will be matched for all other churches.

School of Education Grant:  This grant is specifically for students pursuing their graduate degree within the School of Education. You must have completed one semester of your program to qualify.

FPU Scholarships: Visit scholarships.fresno.edu to find individual scholarships that credential and graduate students can qualify for based on your program of interest.

TEACH Grant: The TEACH Grant provides up to $3,736 a year if you are completing coursework needed to begin a career in teaching. Ask your student financial services representative for more information.

Forgiveness Programs: There are two loan forgiveness programs: teacher and public service loan forgiveness. You could qualify for one of these based on your employment or teaching in a low-income school. Visit fpu.edu/fedaid for more information.
